Preschool
About 20 children attend our preschool named „Hope“ (in Spanish = Preescolar „La Esperanza“) in the centre of Santo Domingo. Under the guidance of their teacher Mercedes, they are being prepared to attend a regular school afterwards. All of these children receive a daily meal – a further inducement for a lot of parents to send their children to school.
School
Even though school attendance is free of cost, there are many families that cannot procure the money for their children's school uniforms, school material or the monthly transportation expenses. In these cases, the project helps.
The children attending the forms 1 until 4 of our school receive a daily meal, just like the preschool children as well. Furthermore, their teeth are examined regularly by the project's dentist. In the case of personal or family problems, the psychologist is available who supports the parents as well. The school works together with the MECD (Department of Education) and expands continuously.
Alphabetisation
In the centre „La Esperanza“, also adult analphabets can learn how to read and to write. In many cases, these are young people that have not been sent to school when they were children themselves, because they had to help their parents on the fields or because they simply had not the money to cover the expenses that accumulate with a regular school attendance. The new government’s programme envisions campaigns for the alphabetisation of the Nicaraguan population. Pupils that wish to graduate from school have to prove that they have alphabetized a person.
Library in Altagracia
The reference library in Altagracia is a drop-in centre for many readers from the surrounding villages. With German help, it is amplified constantly.
Scholarships
Gifted but destitute students receive a scholarship of between 25 and 100$ per month. After the completion of their studies they are obliged to pay this money back in rates. With this repayments, they ensure the conveyance of the next students which are in need of a scholarship.
